The National Quantum Initiative Advisory Committee (NQIAC), established under the National Quantum Initiative Act enacted in December 2018, has released its second independent assessment focusing on quantum networking and the pivotal role of testbeds in advancing these technologies. The report, titled “Quantum Networking: Findings and Recommendations for Growing American Leadership,” highlights the potential impact of quantum networking on U.S. economic prosperity and national security, emphasizing the need for ongoing research and development (R&D) into quantum networking, its applications and enabling technologies.

It distinguishes testbeds as crucial platforms for rigorous testing of quantum networking technologies and offers seven recommendations, including continued R&D support, development of progress metrics, and enhanced industry and international collaboration. The report also stresses the importance of training a diverse quantum workforce through strategic use of testbeds, reinforcing NQIAC’s mission to guide U.S. leadership in quantum information science.
